Slapton Line is Closed

The Slapton Line between Torcross and Beesands has been seriously damaged as a result of the high tides and weather conditions.

The combination of the full moon causing particularly high tides, the low pressure, freezing road temperatures and the Easterly wind direction, has resulted in around 200 metres of one side of the carriageway to break up, and has been washed away.

People are being asked to avoid the area and the Maritime Coastguard Agency, South Hams District Council and Devon County Council are working together with the Slapton Line Partnership to try and minimise the impact of the damage to local residents and road users.

The road is closed and diversions are in place for motorists. Devon County Council’s Highways and Environment teams are closely assessing the situation and the scale of the damage, and with more high tides and easterly winds expected over the next few days the safety of the public remains the priority.

The current diversion route is the A379 via Kingsbridge and the A381 to Totnes Cross and the A3122 to Dartmouth.
